SMALL SCALE TREE NURSERY

SMALL SCALE TREE NURSERY 2

A large share of arable land in the semi-arid tropics suffers from land degradation. Destruction of forests, combined with climate change, has led to reduced rainfall and increasing soil erosion — and this has caused food scarcities and hardship for people living around the forests. We need a tree nursery system.

The majority of Africans depend on agriculture for their livelihood, yet their limited farmland has been devastated by deforestation, drought, war, and over-farming. Deforestation is rampant as trees provide a source of income for the rural poor as by-products are sold as fuel wood or charcoal to be used for cooking. Land is also cleared for farming or grazing.

One Non Government Organization (NGO) asks for donations of $1000 to reforest 8 hectares (20 acres) of forest with a 87% survival rate.

That same $1000 can provide a solution to famine and drought with the same area with a 95% survival rate using 500 seedlings x 13 – 1.5 acre  farms using the Small-scale Tree Nursery

It is very advantageous to shift towards decentralized, Small-scale Tree Nurseries whether managed by individuals or groups of farmers, by villages or by members of farmer organisations or schools. This trend towards decentralization can be one of the most significant developments in forestry in recent years.

The biggest difference is that the Small-scale Tree Nursery is very scale able: the women farmers and their families  are committed to the project because it is theirs and it is profitable. Women farmers are very anxious to get involved.

Most farmers have the basic skills needed to raise plants and protect tree seedlings. Very often, people can be found in a rural community who have more extensive knowledge than foresters on propagation techniques of a wide range of tree species.

The Small-scale Tree Nursery model means that there is a much higher chance of the new trees being cared for and protected by women farmers and their families long into the future.

A Small-scale Tree Nursery of this type may produce up to several thousand seedlings in a year.

  • Experience shows that seedlings are often tended with greater care in small-scale nurseries.
  • Benefits of cash earning from raising seedlings can be more widely distributed.
  • Higher potential for the range of species and number of seedlings can be raised to correspond with farmers’ needs.
  • Transportation problems are minimized – as a result there is more choice in production methods, and timing of seedling collection and planting.
  • Small-scale nurseries can serve as an excellent model, demonstrating methods of raising seedlings to a wider audience.

Locations of a Small-scale Tree Nursery

Plots beneath trees such as bananas are often chosen as they provide natural shade. Patches of ground formerly used for charcoal production, are also favored, as seed tends to germinate more readily among the ashy soil, free of competition from weeds (the burning process having sterilized the soil). The sites of old huts are another common location, since the soil tends to have been enriched with matter such as dung and ash from cooking fires.

The nursery can be located close to the village hand pump. The project provided a barrel which was sunk into the ground to be automatically filled from the overflow channel. Having the pump within the nursery greatly assisted watering operations for the nursery

The Small-scale Tree Nursery project objectives include:

  • Strengthening the environment by offsetting carbon emissions, preventing soil erosion, and creating new income;
  • Diversifying rural economies, creating employment, and helping to mitigate urban migration;
  • During a series of hands-on workshops, are developed to study agricultural technical skills of rural farmers (two from each benefiting village) to maintain the Small-scale Tree Nursery (including, grafting, planting, treatment of diseases, and marketing); and
  • Diversifying diets and contributing to public health initiatives from the consumption of fruit.

Carbon Emissions Management

Living Water MicroFinance Inc. manages the Today’s Tall Tree Nursery, which develops the nursery stock from seed. The women farmers and their families farm on 1.5 acre farms that are subleased for 50 years, on condition that the specific trees on their land are not to be destroyed.

On average, about 20% of all seedlings raised comprise species grown for fodder (hedging), whilst 10% are species grown primarily as fuel, fencing and timber. The balance is made up of orange, lemon and other horticultural species, depending on the site.

These women farmers earn money from the following salable products from the fruit and nut trees, the foliage for livestock, the bee keeping and the rabbit keeping. The funds that are necessary to start their business comes from Micro Finance with conditions that certain trees are not to be destroyed.

They can also begin their own Small-scale Tree Nursery.  The small seedlings from the Today’s Tall Tree Nursery are transplanted on their farm, which are used to furnish salable small trees for other women’s new farms that are being sublet.

TODAY’S TALL TREE NURSERY
Today's Tall Trees

There is still a need for a Today’s Tall Tree Nursery to assure longevity of the project.

  • Training at colony tree nursery brings field staff into closer contact with farmers.
  • Easy testing and application of techniques suited to small-scale production and upgrading of farmer skills.

Features that Differentiate the Improved Today’s Tall Tree Nurseries from the Indigenous Nurseries

  • Timing Rather than being established at the beginning of the rains, Today’s Tall Tree on-farm nurseries are established in time to produce seedlings ready for planting-out at this point. This clearly increases the likely survival of the seedlings in the field, but is not always easy for farmers to adopt, due to the higher labor demands for watering in the preceding dry season. The exact time of nursery establishment of course depends upon the species being raised.
  • Quality Seed and Sowing Procedures: The correct seed treatment prior to sowing for different species, and the need to sow seed evenly, to prevent overcrowding.
  • Raised Seedbeds: Although the seedbeds of indigenous nurseries are often slightly raised, a raised seedbed supported by stones, pieces of timber, or similar material can effect a big improvement in root development. It also improves drainage and is less susceptible to erosion during heavy rains.
  • Protection and Maintenance: The protection afforded to indigenous nurseries is often minimal. By contrast, Today’s Tall Tree nurseries are regularly watered (during the dry season) and weeded. They may also be protected from sun and heavy rain by a simple shade supported on poles.
  • The concept of Seed Production Units (SPUs): each SPU measured 10 x 10 m, and contained four blocks of trees, each block being wholly planted with one of the Today’s Tall Tree species.
  • Improved Soil Mixture: Whereas indigenous nurseries usually utilize ordinary soil, the use of topsoil enriched with layers of compost and biochar are used. This produces better, healthier seedlings.

Biochar: the Natural Fertilizer

The source of the fuel and cooking comes from the production of charcoal, the biochar, produced from the kiln as shown below: another salable bi-product.  Biochar is added to the tree pot holes along with compost in several layers.

The majority of seeds had been transplanted as wildlings from forest or other land not belonging to the household. The participants are asked to split into smaller groups again and undertake the following two practical activities:

  • To construct a monthly seed calendar, detailing the best collection times for 24 of the most highly valued species.
  • To construct a series of distribution maps of potentially good seed stands, using a basic location map of the area.

Community Forestry Projects

Communal ownership of the nurseries in Africa has failed because the farmers are not committed to the project because it is not theirs. Yet, in Vietnam, the number of seedlings produced annually through the social forestry project grew rapidly from 1 million in 1987, to 8.5 million in 1989, to 21 million in 1992. In the order of 50 million seedlings were raised and distributed during this period in 32 of the 39 districts in the FCP area. By 1992 there were some 330 formal and informal nurseries in operation. In Vietnam, under the new Land Law, land is made available to farming families and organisations on the basis of ‘allocations’, for periods of 30-60 years for forest/hill land.

Tree nurseries run by agricultural high schools can form an important part of a Community Forestry projects. They are receptive to the new idea of raising trees in local nurseries. This can be an essential component of supporting a small-scale nursery system: the training for extension field staff and nursery managers.

The Market for a Tree Nursery

They can receive orders for large quantities of:

The Neem Tree: the fruit  looks a lot like an olive. The seed oil is mostly known and valued as a safe and effective insecticide against insects like mosquitoes. The Black Thorn Tree: Acacia mellifera, a drought-resistant species widely spread in arid and semi-arid areas of Africa

The Black Thorn Tree is multipurpose. The leaves, pods and young shoots are protein nutritious and make fodder for livestock and wild animals. Dry leaves and pods are eaten on the ground by cattle and sheep who, unlike goats, are less likely to browse them. The flowers are attractive to bees, which produce a high quality honey, hence the name mellifera. The timber is hard, almost black when polished, resistant to termites and used for construction and fencing.  This tree must be protected from livestock for two years.

Women farmers can now go into the bee-raising business.

Each village of small-scale nursery produces 15 to 20 different fodder species, all being distributed free of monetary charge (members having contributed their labor to Today’s Tall Tree nursery production).

HELPING SOLVE THE WORLD’S CARBON POLLUTION

New Trees are the only solution to soaking up Carbon Dioxide:

Our Mission: to help solve the problem of carbon dioxide build up in the world by growing and managing mature forests of foliage, fruit and nut trees that eventually are used in lumber — not firewood. The Carbon Tax Fund supports a Micro finance initiative to support women farmers and their families who will nurture fruit and nut trees over their lifetime. The Net Present Value of each tree is $1.49 to $2.59.

Christianity and Hinduism Differences

BILLIONS OF CHRISTIANS CAN’ T ALL BE WRONG!

Christianity is not a philosophy, but it is  a relationship with God, your Creator,  in Christ TODAY. It is not knowledge of abstract principles.

HOW DO WE KNOW THIS?

1. DELIVERANCE?

Some Christian disciples use deliverance to deliver away evil spirits influencing people. These evil spirits cause depression, addictions and illness through all forms of stress.

2. COMPLETE SENSE OF PEACE?

After you have been delivered from evil influences, you will have a definite physical experience of a complete sense of peace.

3.  HEALING?

Once you experience a physical sense of peace because of deliverance, you know that you will be healed. This helps you build up your faith, which is very crucial: No faith! No healing!

Some Christian disciples have the gift of healing.   Only the Name of Jesus Christ makes healing and deliverance possible.

THE WHOLE FAMILY BENEFITS

In the end, one Christian conversion will benefit the whole family.  The gifts of the Holy Spirit of healing and deliverance will help the whole family. A prayer of deliverance of evil spirits will leave any member of the family with a complete sense of peace immediately. A prayer of healing from a Christian disciple produces 80% healing. The remaining healing comes from continued prayer of praise and thanksgiving until all the healing is complete. This healing comes from the Holy Spirit through the power in the Name of Jesus Christ.  No other god or deity or doctor uses this power. This proves the TRUTH OF CHRISTIANITY.

ASTONISHING PREDICTIONS

God divinely inspired the BIBLE . How do we know? Each of eight accurate predictions  shows a high probability mathematically. The probability of one individual fulfilling eight prophecies have odds of 1 in 10 17  (1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000). Jesus Christ fulfilled all prophecies, therefore the Bible MUST BE TRUE.

DIVINE OR HUMAN CALIPHS

The Old Testament indicates another 40 astonishing predictions.

CHINA DECEASED RELATIVES

Christianity experiences stunning growth—from approximately 3.8 million adherents in China in 1956 to an estimated 87 to 100 million Christians today.

CHINA AND THE HOLY SPIRIT

Chinese Religion God

AN EXPERIMENT OF GOD’S TOUCH 2

HOW IS JESUS STILL ALIVE TODAY?

Jesus is alive today! He heals today (through His followers) and in many cases it is realized immediately. How else can you explain the explosion of Christianity, the world’s largest religion, on earth: 2.2 billion adherents, nearly a third (31 percent) of all 6.9 billion people on Earth.

Christians know and feel His Presence; they communicate with Him personally; Christian prayers are always answered.

This author has been given the Gift of Healing only because he is a Christian Lay Missionary, who travels  two to three places every year. On his last trip to Columbia he successfully transferred his Gift to his Spanish translators, who were able to heal as he did. He has healed Muslims to their great surprise.

He also delivers away evil spirits along with their healing. All those who are delivered from evil spirits feel a complete physical  sense of peace.

DREAMS AND VISIONS

God can give a message to those non-Christians to change their heart.  God knows faith will be developed eventually. God will come to you in the form of dreams or visions. So be sensitive to any dreams or visions, when you ask God for it earnestly.

Is the BIBLE true? 2

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED HOW TO BECOME A CHRISTIAN?

god proof

  • Christians don’t shout, “I live a clean life!” Christians whisper “I feel  lost, but now God found me and God forgives me.”
  • Christians don’t speak with pride. They confess that they stumble and need Christ to be their guide.
  • Christians don’t say,” I’m strong.” They say they try to be strong because they need strength.
  • Christians don’t brag about success, but they admit that they fail and they need God to clean the mess.
  • Christians don’t claim to be perfect, but God still believes in them.
  • Christians still feel the sting of pain. They have their share of headaches but they still call upon His Name.
  • Christians are not holier than others. They are simple sinners who receive God’s unbelievable Grace.

Christianity on a Table Napkin:

Deliverance EVIL SPIRITS

“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”                                                                                                                                     Romans 10:9

The real Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God. He was send by God to come to the earth in the body of a human being. That was, so that He could suffer in the flesh, and take all our sins upon Himself and die in our place. He rose from the dead and lives to pray for us daily.
He is the Savior – The angel announced to Mary; …and you shall call His name JESUS: for He shall save His people from their sins.     Matthew 1:21  It means He has the power to free us, save us and deliver us from sin. He is merciful and has the power to forgive. He brings good news to the poor, heals the heart-broken, announce freedom to all captives, pardons all prisoners. He comforts mourners. He has healing in His hands.
To receive Jesus as your Savior… SAY:

Lord Jesus, You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God. Please hear me today and help me! I want to receive You as my Lord and Savior. Be Lord of my life!  Lord Jesus, I believe that You died for me and that God raised You from the dead. Forgive me all my sins and take all my sins away. Come into my heart and be my Savior and Lord, and fill me with Your Holy Spirit. Amen
Your life will begin to change in an amazing way. Without expecting  anything, be sensitive to any dreams or visions.

God the Father will wipe every tear from our eyes, and there shall be no more death or mourning, crying out or pain. We will be like Him, for we will see Him as He is The Holy Spirit will have made all things new. Eternal joy will begin.  “For the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is His name.”                                                     Luke 1: 49

Are we not like Barabbas who was justly condemned for murder, but saved by the innocent Jesus on the cross? Are we not like the adulterous woman, deserving of death by stoning, to whom Jesus says, “I do not condemn you”?  And Jesus saved them both. In fact, Jesus came to earth specifically to look for and save those who were lost, like you.

“Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the LORD, “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool”.                                       Isaiah 1:18

You may need some counseling with a pastor, priest or competent Christian worker, who will introduce you to a Short Course on Who is Jesus? Start by reading a short biography of Jesus in  the Gospel of Luke. Read several verses before going to bed and read the same verse upon arising.  He will defend you from attacks of the enemy when you ask Him.
